2014 First World War Heritage Trail

A First World War Heritage Trail has been launched by Auckland Council – 56 sites across Auckland with a link to WW1 are listed in a booklet available at libraries, and as an app called STQRY that can be downloaded to your smartphone.  Some of the 56 sites feature large signs with photos and stories that explain Aucklanders’ involvement in the First World War. Others like St Mark’s Church are just listed in the booklet.

University of Auckland Roll of Honour.

The University of Auckland Libraries and Learning Services has launched the Special Collections First World War centenary website. The centrepiece of the site is the University’s First World War Roll of Honour which contains information about 720 men and women from the institution who went to war. Now an archive in the Library’s Special Collections department, the Roll of Honour was digitised to make it accessible to a wide audience and is one of the many initiatives being undertaken around the country to mark the centenary of the War.

The digitised Roll can be searched and viewed as page-turning books. The website also features contextual information about the University during that era, the involvement of Collegians in the war and short biographies of a few of the 715 men and five women from the Roll. The website will be enhanced over the centenary to include more stories about Collegians and to explore other aspects of the war and its aftermath, drawing on material from Special Collections and elsewhere.
